The food and drink industry is one of the most significant and dynamic industries in the European sector. Consisting of over 300, 000 companies and a workforce of over 4 million, this highly competitive industry serving over 500 million consumers is a pillar of the European economy. Even with its size and strength, however, this industry has not been infallible. Up to 2007, European food manufacturers enjoyed an annual turnover of over £700 billion. Conversely, throughout 2008 and 2009 even the most successful European food manufacturers faced many challenges in light of a global recession. Finance shortages and excess red tape set off a chain of events including difficulties in accessing raw materials, lack of innovation, and a substantial decline in production. The European Food Industry, consistently a global leader in food production, was facing the threat of losing its top position in the market.
